Tales of Transformation

An exhibition exploring the rise, fall and reinvention of European industrial centres

An open book with a vibrant cityscape emerging from its pages, including diverse buildings, structures, and a prominent clock tower. Tiny figures of people and vehicles are dotted around, symbolizing the dynamic life of the city. The background is a deep blue.

In the 19th century, industrial production spread throughout Saxony from Chemnitz. The city remained the heart of industrial work even during the GDR era. However, in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, there were radical slumps, industrial plants stood still, and the city and its people were forced to reinvent themselves. Similar changes were also experienced by the European industrial cities of Gabrovo, Łódź, Mulhouse, Tampere and, of course, Manchester. The exhibition told the story of the rise and fall of these cities, but above all of the people who now work, live or create there, where the cityscape was once dominated by the noise of machines and smoking chimneys.
