Moving Sounds – European Summer Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir
A unifying tango concert
The Sächsische Mozart-Gesellschaft e.V. invited enthusiastic singers and instrumentalists from Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Ukraine and Austria to a special tango concert for the European Summer Philharmonic and Choir. In the Capital of Culture year, they all honoured the city of Chemnitz as the cradle of the bandoneon. Carl Friedrich Uhlig's invention of the concertina in Chemnitz in 1834 marked the beginning of the bandoneon's triumphal march as the characteristic instrument of the Argentine tango. The amateurs and professionals were led by the octet of the Gran Orquesta Carambolage around tango legend Jürgen Karthe, which had a unique line-up of ten bandoneons alone. This bandoneon line-up was the orchestra's centrepiece and gave the tango its soul. The concert was repeated the following day in Chomutov in the Czech Republic.
