Karl Schmidt-Rottluff House

The Ensemble Karl Schmidt-Rottluff is the childhood home of the Rottluff-born artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and an intervention area  for Chemnitz 2025. In this urban development project, locations are undergoing a transformation so that they can be meaningfully utilised by the city community in the future.  With the artists' house, another exhibition venue is now part of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.

Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) was a co-founder of the group of artists known as ‘Brücke’ (1905-1913) and is one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism and one of the most influential German artists of the 20th century.

Three large thematic blocks link the exhibition in the museum: the work and biography of the artist, the history of Expressionism in Chemnitz and the history of the city during the artist's lifetime. The rooms are each dedicated to different sub-themes, including life in Rottluff, his school days and artistic beginnings, the Brücke period, the presentation of wooden and jewellery objects, and life in Chemnitz during the war. Numerous objects, drawings and documents are being exhibited for the first time; some have never been published before.
