From 31 January to 18 May 2025, the Chemnitz Industrial Museum hosted the unique exhibition "John Cage. Museumcircle". Over 100 objects from 52 museums and exhibition spaces in the region were selected at random and arranged by chance. Between nutcrackers, motorbikes and expressionist art, a space was created for free association about the region's cultural heritage.

The concept of the "Museumcircle" came from avant-garde artist John Cage (1902-1992). The composer, performance artist and co-founder of the Fluxus movement developed the score for this unusual exhibition idea in 1991: in one museum in a city, exhibits from all the other museums in the city were to be selected at random.

This idea was expanded in the Museum of Industry: not only did objects from Chemnitz museums come together here, but also from the 38 municipalities and communities in the Capital of Culture region. The show reflected the art and cultural history of the region, which was characterised by mining, industrialisation and craftsmanship.

The exhibition was curated by Alexander Ochs, who was also responsible for curating the PURPLE PATH art and sculpture trail.
