An exhibition on the true cost of mining in the German /Czech Ore Mountains

P: Dirk Hanus / I: Mathilde Schliebe

The element uranium was dis- covered in Johanngeorgenstadt. Marie Curie discovered radioactivity and the elements of radium and polonium using pitchblende from Jáchymov. The world became a different place in the aftermath – including the Ore Mountains. The region bears the eternal costs of its destructivity, with evidence of forced labour, resettlement, and environmental degradation still present. This artistic and scientific project renders the evidence visual. It collects artefacts, evaluates archive material, and draws on the experiences of those who live on this land. A travelling exhibition in Jáchymov and Chemnitz combines the research results with new artworks that visualise previously invisible elements.

When? From September 2025 until October 2025

Where? Johanngeorgenstadt D, Jàchymov CZ
