The European Summer Philharmonic and -Choir 2025 is part of the Saxon Mozart Society's project for the European Capital of Culture 2025 „Bewegende Klänge/Moving Sounds – Concertina & Bandoneon“. Carl Friedrich Uhligs invention of the Concertina in 1834 marked Chemnitz as the birthplace of the bandoneon. To honour Uhlig and the instrument builders who globally exported the bandoneon, we will tell the story of the World cultural heritage Argentinian Tango and connect it to its roots within the European Capital of Culture 2025. The commissioned work Tango Pur! aims to interweave the threads of instrument history that stretch from the former textile industry city of Chemnitz - the Saxon Manchester - across the world. With the Concertina as the little man’s piano and the Concertina-labour-associations, Latin American folklore, the songs and dances of migrants from Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Portugal fused in the melting pot of immigrants in Buenos Aires to form the Tango Argentino. Facets of global enthusiasm today are the legendary golden era, the presentability in Europe, the Finnish manifestation and the revival by Astor Piazzolla. Within this, the Bandoneon expresses the musical soul, while our hearts encounter in the dance. In our opinion, a beautiful symbol for Chemnitz the European Capital of Culture 2025.
