"Ushpisin" - Aramaic for "guests" - is the title of the main exhibition of Sukkot Mittweida. Artists from the action week will be showing their work in the Altes Erbgericht (Kirchstraße 16). The exhibition will be complemented by further installations and interventions in the urban space.

Opening of a week-long festival with talks, activities and encounters centred around art and family. In the spirit of the "four species", we celebrate the diversity of people - come along and experience a colourful Sukkot in Mittweida!

5-7pm: Babylon Orchestra concert
The Babylon Orchestra crowned the colourful and diverse vernissage of Sukkot Mittweida with its intercultural sound. The urban fusion of European and Middle Eastern melodies created a musical bridge between different cultures and traditions.

17:30-19:30: Hebrew course, taught by Margarete Füßer
Hebrew - a language that has not been spoken for almost two thousand years, but has been the official language of a young state in the Middle East for over 100 years. Hebrew teacher Margarete Füßer explains how to speak, read and write in Hebrew. A course for anyone who wants to get to know the language of the Bible and modern Israel and learn about its history.

19:30-21:00: Belonging, home and citrus fruits: reading and discussion
The two authors Nirit Sommerfeld and Alena Jabarine present their debut novels, in which they describe their personal relationship to a country - a place with two names: Israel and Palestine. Accompanied by moderator Yona-Dvir Shalem.

On 7 October 2023, Hamas attacks civilians in Israel, killing hundreds and abducting hostages. Israel responds with attacks on Gaza. Thousands of Palestinians die, the humanitarian situation escalates. There is no end in sight. Panel with: Dr Andrea Brämer, Alena Jabarine & Nirit Sommerfeld. Moderated by Prof Christoph Meyer (IKKS University of Applied Sciences Mittweida)

Various films on identity, Jewishness and homeland - some by exhibiting artists, some by contemporary filmmakers. At the end of the day: "No Other Land" followed by a discussion.

7 pm: Lili Sommerfeld's Sukkah (concert)
With her own songs, she tells of the conditions of love, of mourning and dreams in Israel-Palestine, of failure and getting up, and in doing so sprinkles glitter on the crisis-ridden times. Whether as the "German answer to Adele" (Berliner Zeitung) or the "Beyoncé of Kreuzberg" (Berliner Morgenpost): Lili Sommerfeld's voice will be remembered.

Tchelet Zohar, Eyal Assouline and Noam Helfer invite you to a special evening: a small-scale culinary installation with food, music and poetry. As a sensual "first date" to the performance East on East the following day.

19:30: Artist Talk: Immigration, Temporality and Home
Alexander Ochs, curator of the "Purple Path" and initiator of Sukkot Mittweida, talks to participating artists about their works. In focus: questions about immigration, temporality and home - in the context of Sukkot and the festival.

Sukkot Mittweida is cooperating with the House on the Hill Festival organised by the Mittweida student club, and we are celebrating the free festival with you with a small, (very, very) fine line-up. Music, drinks, dance - come to the party!

2 pm: Guided tour for pupils (15-18 years)
A tour through the various exhibition venues and installations, adapted and formatted for young adults (15-18 years). Coordinated with the schools in Mittweida and brings the interested young adults into dialogue with the artists of Sukkot Mittweida and discusses questions about the concept and themes of the project.

6 pm: East on East, Shabbat and culinary event
A ritual dinner performance between silence and salt, memory and noise. Somewhere between Middle Eastern Jewish Shabbat tradition and East German kitchens, between the spirit of the ancestors and dreams of the future - ״East on East״ invites you to a fleeting palace of sound, food and inner silence.

From 5 to 12 October, students and artists will rehearse together for a performance on the theme of exile and homeland. There will be workshops every day and the play will be presented on 12 October as the conclusion of the theatre laboratory.
