Under the motto ‘C the Unseen’, the Vokswagen Group and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 are inviting visitors to the world-renowned INSIDE OUT art project at the Karl Marx Monument on Brückenstraße as part of the KOSMOS Festival from 13 to 15 June. The participatory project gives the people of the city a face - both literally and figuratively.
Since its inception in 2011, more than 550,000 people from 152 countries and all continents have taken part in the INSIDE OUT project. The idea behind the project is to make socially relevant topics such as diversity, community, feminism, racism and climate change visible.
In Chemnitz, too, citizens and guests are given the opportunity to make their personal message visible through large-format black and white portraits. These will be taken on site in a specially set up photobooth - directly in front of the highly symbolic Karl Marx Monument. The monumental bust commemorates the period from 1953 to 1990, when Chemnitz was known as ‘Karl Marx City’ - a formative era that is firmly anchored in the city's collective memory. This place in particular thus becomes a platform for visions of the future and individual voices.
INSIDE OUT is supported by Volkswagen Group Culture as part of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. The Volkswagen Group's commitment to Chemnitz 2025 is part of its diverse cultural sponsorship and its contribution to society in Saxony. The aim is to make artistic perspectives visible and promote social dialogue through art - with a focus on curiosity, participation and future-oriented cooperation.
