The conference "Fairground or Reality", which will take place on 20 and 21 September 2025 to accompany the world premiere of the opera "Fairground" based on the novel by Werner Bräunig, will conclude with a science slam.
Werner Bräunig's novel Rummelplatz is a treasure trove for a wide range of scientific disciplines. The main political, social and economic developments of the years 1949-1953 flow into the polyphonic panorama of the post-war period. German division, nuclear weapons, reconstruction and feminism are just a few of the keywords. The world of the novel includes uranium mining and communist ideology as well as popular music and the "death of the miners". Bräunig's own fate reflects the novel's central conflict between individuality and an authoritarian regime.

Fairground

Theater Chemnitz is developing the multi-part project Rummelplatz. The starting point is Werner Bräunig's novel of the same name, which Ludger Vollmer (composition) and Jenny Erpenbeck (libretto) are adapting as a work of music theatre for the stage. The world premiere of the work is planned for autumn 2025. It will be about how people relate to social conditions, the political system and the thoughts and moods of their time. The project is part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
