Title: Local vs. Europe in Europe - Free journalism between close-up and far-sightedness

Description: In times of social upheaval and geopolitical tensions, independent journalism faces new challenges and opportunities. The panel discussion "Local vs. Europe in Europe" sheds light on the interactions between local and European journalism and discusses their significance for democratic opinion-forming.

Independent radio stations and community media play a central role in communicating local issues and perspectives, while at the same time embedding European developments in their context. In doing so, they create an indispensable space for diversity of opinion and differentiated debate. It is particularly noteworthy that the radio broadcasters in independent radio stations mostly do this work on a voluntary basis and of their own accord - a commitment that deserves the utmost respect and protection. This voluntary commitment makes a significant contribution to the diversity of the media landscape and, in many regions, ensures the only critical reporting away from commercial interests.

But what impact does this journalism have in an increasingly polarised public? And why is its social significance often underestimated?

The discussion is dedicated to the following questions:

  • How do local issues influence European reporting and vice versa?
  • What challenges arise for volunteer radio journalists who are active in both spheres?
  • What strategies can help to better communicate the importance of independent radio and community media and strengthen their role in society?
  • How can community media help to translate European issues into local contexts and at the same time make local concerns visible across Europe?

Experienced radio and media professionals from independent radio stations and other journalistic fields, as well as representatives from politics and academia, will share their perspectives and show how independent reporting can retain its relevance despite financial and political hurdles.

The event offers a space for discussion, exchange and inspiration - for everyone who is committed to and interested in independent journalism and its future.
