The Art Collections look forward to welcoming you, your family and friends to the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz (Theaterplatz 1) as part of a soft opening on Saturday, 9 August 2025, from 5 pm.

The Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz are presenting a special exhibition of works by Edvard Munch (1863-1944) in the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, which focuses on the feeling of fear. The Chemnitz Art Collections have a significant collection of prints and a painting by Edvard Munch, which will be thankfully expanded for the exhibition with loans from international and national institutions and private collections. At the same time, contemporary works by artists such as Marina Abramović, Monica Bonvicini, Irene Bösch, Michael Morgner, Osmar Osten, Neo Rauch, Paula Rego and others will be shown in dialogue with Munch's works. From 10 June 2025, the Pavilion of Fear will open up cultural offerings in the city as a mobile meeting space.

Edvard Munch

The exhibition at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz focuses on the theme of fear, based on the works of the most important pioneer of modern painting in Europe. Munch's works on this existential theme are linked to contemporary positions dealing with loneliness, illness and loss. The exhibition is part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
