In 1890, the offer that Antonin Dvořák received from New York was still a long way off. At his country estate in western Bohemia, complete with an English garden, he felt right at home. His 8th Symphony reflects his cheerfulness and his love of nature - not a trace of melancholy or departure into a new world.
In order to help the distribution of the scores, Dvořák even broke with his publisher for the first time and switched to the British music publisher Novello. The Europe-wide performances in Prague, Vienna, London and Cambridge were always accompanied by great applause.
