This temporary exhibition offers exclusive insights into a previously inaccessible part of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Between generators, mining machines and depth indicators, highlights shed light on the history of the Wismut company and provide an initial outlook on the future.
Wismut shaped world politics in the 20th century. It was a key factor in the Cold War. With its uranium production, it played a decisive role in the rivalry between the nuclear powers in East and West and rose to become the world's largest uranium ore mining company, ultimately affecting people throughout the GDR. Its ambivalent legacy also included a partly highly radioactively contaminated post-mining landscape, which has been undergoing remediation since 1991 as an unprecedented large-scale ecological project.
In order to anchor this world-class history in the public consciousness, three presentation sites are planned for the Wismut heritage - one of which will be built at Shaft 371 in the next few years.
