KinderMaker workshop "Screen printing rethought - digital meets craft"

With Paula, children and young people discover the exciting world of screen printing - in a completely new form. Screen printing normally involves working with photo emulsions and chemicals to transfer motifs to the screen - but it can also be easier.

Screen printing can also be designed using modern tools: With digital tools such as the laser cutter, the printing screens can be engraved directly and cleanly. This creates completely customised templates that can then be used immediately for printing.

But that's not all: the classic tools for printing, known as squeegees, can also be produced in-house. Instead of buying them ready-made, they are built with the 3D printer - stable in the handle and flexible at the edge so that the ink is pressed well through the screen. In this way, participants not only learn about a traditional printing technique, but also how digital fabrication can make designing easier and open up new possibilities.

The children design their own motifs, which are then transferred to a screen. Then it's time to Mix the ink, pick up the squeegee and start printing! They print on postcards or small pieces of fabric that can be used as patches. At the end, everyone can take home a finished work - as a souvenir or as a gift.

The workshop combines old crafts with new technologies. It makes it clear that digital tools are not only intended for prototypes, but can also enrich and simplify creative processes. Above all, however, it is about trying things out, making things yourself and having fun designing together. The workshop is suitable for children aged 8 and over. Previous knowledge is not necessary - curiosity is enough.
