The central theme of the foundation on questions of national identity also includes the importance of home for each individual, such as family, childhood memories and a familiar environment. Particularly in times of great international upheaval and an intensified debate on the integration of refugees, the question of one's own identity, which has a home and a sense of belonging, arises. What does it do to people who have lost their home, who no longer feel at home in their society? Or is the concept overturned and home is wherever the centre of life is, where people can live safely and free from existential fears? And what idea of home do those who fear external influences from immigration have? Ines Geipel, Dr Matthias Rößler and Pascal Anselmi will discuss these issues, with Dr Agata Klaus, Managing Director of the German National Foundation, as moderator.

Prof Ines Geipel, born in Dresden, is a writer, publicist and professor of verse art at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. The former world-class sprinter fled to West Germany in 1989. She is a member of the Senate of the German National Foundation.

Dr Matthias Rößler, born in Dresden, former President of the State Parliament of Saxony, education expert and representative at the "Round Table" for Dresden during the reunification years.

Pascal Anselmi, senior manager in the flagship project "European Workshop for Culture and Democracy" as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. Cultural transformation processes in East Germany are a focus of his work.

The non-partisan, independent and non-profit German National Foundation was founded in 1993 by Helmut Schmidt and his companions. Since then, the foundation has been committed to strengthening the growing together of East and West Germany and the idea of the German nation as part of a united Europe. In addition to the annual awarding of the German National Prize, it supports European youth projects and publishes the book series "Reports on the State of the Nation". The Capital of Culture Chemnitz supports this event, as does the Foundation's Friends' Association.

European Makers of Democracy
