As a member of the heimaten network of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, Chemnitz European Capital of Culture 2025 is organising the 'haamit heimaten' festival. The main projects European Workshop for Culture and Democracy and Living Neighbourhood bring positions on diverse understandings of home from the European Capital of Culture and the Capital of Culture region into the network. Saxony was and is home to many people.
The term "haamit" - the local Saxon variant of "Heimat" (home) - meets the actively conceived verb "heimaten". The combination 'haamit heimaten' can thus be read as seeking, finding and making a home - in allotment gardens, neighbourhoods and in conversation with one another. The festival offers a range of discussion events, a critical walk through the Fritz Heckert area as well as an excursion to the apple festival in Neukirchen in the region and a hike along neighbourhood-planted apple trees.
