Europe - remembering and thinking ahead

To mark the end of the Second World War exactly 80 years ago, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze invites you to the event ‘Europe - remembering and thinking ahead’ on 8 May 2025 at 3 pm at the bench for Justin Sonder on the Brühl (Brühl 46, 09111 Chemnitz). The location at the Justin Sonder bench was chosen deliberately. Justin Sonder, honorary citizen of Chemnitz and Auschwitz survivor, has been in dialogue with young people throughout his life, educating, arousing interest, raising awareness and promoting democracy and openness to the world. At his memorial, children, young people and adults set a strong example for cohesion, diversity and peace as part of Europe Week.
With dance, theatre and thoughts on current global political issues, the city of Chemnitz is dedicating itself to this far-reaching event for Europe. The programme is intended to commemorate the causes and effects of the Second World War, but also to set an example for a peaceful and colourful Chemnitz. The event will be accompanied by two dance performances by the ballet company of the
Chemnitz Municipal Theatre, the Mejo Quartet consisting of members of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra Chemnitz and a play from a cooperation project of the Chemnitz School Theatre Week of the Agricola-Gymnasium Chemnitz and a delegation from Düsseldorf.  

In addition to Lord Mayor Sven Schulze, the President of the State Parliament Alexander Dierks, US Consul General John R. Crosby, the 1st Counsellor of the French Embassy in Germany
French Embassy in Germany Anne-Lise Bagrel and Nerys Jones, Counsellor of the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Germany. Other embassy representatives and the consular corps as well as guests from Chemnitz twin cities will be present.

The event will take place outdoors and is open to the public. Registration registration is not required. Admission is free.
