The conference with lectures and discussions offers a space where science, culture and the general public meet. From today's perspective, it examines the fascination and relevance of Bräunig's novel and places the work in its context. For example, it looks at Bräunig's development from a figurehead of young GDR literature to a critical realist who fell out of favour. The world of Wismut as reflected by contemporary witnesses will also be a topic, as well as major transformations - such as the "Berggeschrei" ("mountain clamour") resulting from the Soviet nuclear programme, the consequences of uranium mining for people and the environment, or the political, economic and social upheavals since 1990 with their consequences for identity and mentality in East Germany, which continue to have an impact to this day.

Fairground

Theater Chemnitz is developing the multi-part project Rummelplatz. The starting point is Werner Bräunig's novel of the same name, which Ludger Vollmer (composition) and Jenny Erpenbeck (libretto) are adapting as a work of music theatre for the stage. The world premiere of the work is planned for autumn 2025. It will be about how people relate to social conditions, the political system and the thoughts and moods of their time. The project is part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
