Iván Fischer and pianist and conductor Zoltán Kocsis, who died in 2016, fulfilled a dream when they founded the Budapest Festival Orchestra in 1983. For years, it has been counted among the ten best orchestras in the world. Its recordings have twice won the highly prestigious Gramophone magazine's annual award, and the orchestra was once nominated for a Grammy. in 2022, Gramophone readers voted the Budapest Festival Orchestra "Orchestra of the Year". Since August 2024, Iván Fischer has also been Music Director of the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO).

The orchestra will perform a programme of works by Fanny Hensel, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Richard Strauss in Chemnitz. The renowned French violinist Renaud Capuçon will be the soloist.
