On 14 June 2025, ramps made of LEGO®️ bricks will be built together with interested parties to enable barrier-free access where it is otherwise made difficult by steps. The colourful bricks not only draw attention to the everyday hurdles that wheelchair users, people with walkers or parents with pushchairs often encounter, but also send a practical signal for inclusion.
In the spirit of sustainability, the ramps are built from donated LEGO bricks. As this requires several thousand pieces, the team of the C2025 gGmbH diversity programme cordially invites you to donate LEGO bricks for accessibility and inclusion with immediate effect. Donations can be handed in from Monday to Friday at the Capital of Culture premises (Hartmannstr. 5, 09111 Chemnitz).
The project is supported by Rita Ebel, the so-called "Lego grandma" from Hanau, who has been building ramps out of LEGO bricks on a voluntary basis for over 20 years, making life easier for people with limited mobility. She herself says: "I want to provide food for thought for a more disabled-friendly society and give people the impetus to become active themselves and improve things" (dpa). The project picks up on this impulse as part of the diversity programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH. The colourful ramps draw attention to the everyday problems of people with disabilities, make a small contribution to improvement and spread good cheer in the process.
Everyone is invited to build ramps together if they enjoy tinkering and clamping. On the day of action, 14 June 2025, at this year's KOSMOS Festival, people will be building together on the grounds around the castle pond from 12 noon to 6 pm! The ramps will be used for charitable purposes in the future and will be made available to interested organisations and projects.
Lego is neither a sponsor nor a co-operation partner of Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH or the Capital of Culture.
