In the GDR, the garage was one of the few spaces that was not directly under the control of the state, the party and the company. The garage courtyard was open to everyone - everyone who had managed to get hold of a car. There was room for tinkering, screwing, hoarding, barbecuing and drinking, an informal and uncontrolled community life that left room for individualism. Most garage courtyards have survived the system and time, they have lost none of their fascination. It is therefore no surprise that the East German garage plays such an important role in literature as a place of longing and everyday life. On two evenings in October, Lutz Seiler and Burkhard Müller will explore the motif of garages in literature at Weltecho Chemnitz.

The literary critic and lecturer at Chemnitz University of Technology Burkhard Müller will read selected stories "about the place where cars and people meet".
