Garden colonies mostly emerged in European cities in the course of industrialisation and the development of the labour movement. Later, during socialist times, people still grew vegetables and cultivated fruit trees, but the gardens also offered space for both leisure and creativity. Allotment tenants from three European countries tell us what it was like at the time. For one day, the Kappler Hang garden colony will be transformed into a stage, with lively performances, interactive games and shared stories during which tenants past and present will reminisce about their experiences and encounters in and among the allotments.
