In the volunteer editorial team, Volunteers for Chemnitz 2025 publish reports on their experiences, assignments and adventures around the European Capital of Culture.

Christina is originally from Upper Franconia, but has lived in Chemnitz for several years. In her free time, she is involved as a volunteer for the European Capital of Culture, including in the volunteer editorial team and for the Free Walking Tour. When she is not volunteering, she can be found on the tennis court or in a café on the Kassberg.

At first, it was just a crazy idea: locals guiding guests of the European Capital of Culture through Chemnitz. And after many months of preparation, we can proudly say that the Free Walking Tour is now an integral part of the city.

Since April 2025, our Free Walking Tours have been guiding visitors from all over the world through Chemnitz. During the walks through the city centre, guests experience the diverse history, architecture and culture up close. The tours are open, entertaining and authentic - led by our volunteer guides who share their enthusiasm for Chemnitz with others.

And the response has been enormous: in less than four months, we have already welcomedover 2,000 visitors! I was able to support the project from the very beginning, develop the route, set up our website, design flyers and train our guides. It is all the more rewarding to see how all the hard work during the Capital of Culture year is paying off.

I am particularly impressed by the international diversity: in addition to numerous guests from all over Germany - including Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Nuremberg, Essen and Munich - travellers from Ireland, Iceland, the USA, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Romania, France, Austria, Poland, Sweden and Turkey also took part in our English-language tours.

The special thing: None of this would be possible without the commitment of us volunteers. Our guides invest time, energy and passion to bring Chemnitz to life - for curious visitors, travellers and locals alike.

We are delighted with this success and say thank you to everyone who took part - and to those who are still to come!
