The Karl Schmidt-Rottluff House in Chemnitz, formerly the childhood home of the artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, who was born in Rottluff in 1884, will be opened as an artists' house on April 6th following extensive renovation work. The German expressionist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976) was a co-founder of the Brücke group of artists (1905-1913) and is one of the most important German artists of the 20th century.
The Karl Schmidt-Rottluff House is an intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. In this urban development project, places undergo a transformation in order to continue to be useful for the city community.
Three major thematic blocks link the exhibition: the work and biography of the artist, the history of Expressionism in Chemnitz and the history of the location during the artist's lifetime. The rooms are each dedicated to different sub-themes, including life in Rottluff, his school days and artistic beginnings, the Brücke period, the presentation of wooden and jewellery objects, and life in Chemnitz during the war. Numerous objects, drawings and documents are being exhibited for the first time; some have never been published before.
