As part of the "Celebrate Generations!" call, the Generation team was looking for projects that discover opportunities for everyone in the characteristics of the generations in order to create their own future prospects.

In the first phase of the open call for proposals, 59 projects were forwarded to the advisory board for selection. Of these, 10 projects did not meet the formal selection criteria. Fourteen projects reached the second phase, which involved a three-month development phase with advisory support from Team Generation. Nine of these projects have now received a contract offer with cooperation funding from Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH.

Advisory boards involved in the call for proposals:

  • Matthias Labisch - German Children and Youth Foundation
  • Karolin Weber - Expert for cultural education work in East Germany
  • Dr Sabine Baumann - Fachverband Kunst- und Kulturpädagogik e.V.
  • Ulf Matysiak - Beisheim Foundation e.V.
  • Christiane Schifferdecker - State Commissioner for Senior Citizens, Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs and Social Cohesion
  • Nancy Gibson - Chemnitz Municipal Music School
  • Lucas Dietrich - Chemnitz Youth Forum

The project promotes the female perspective on transformation and actively integrates girls, women and senior citizens from different cultural backgrounds into artistic, journalistic and craft projects. The aim is to connect people of different generations and social classes through open workshops and events and to offer a creative space to shape the social environment together. In the Capital of Culture year, for example, a ceramics project with citizen participation is taking place both in Chemnitz and in Portugal, as well as a calendar and a choir project

The project explores post-socialist transformation processes and their impact on East German and (East) European identities. People are actively involved in various formats such as workshops, dialogue and listening formats and exhibitions in order to make thoughts and feelings visible across generations and promote exchange. The aim is to promote an understanding of a common European civil society through exchange with partner organisations from the Czech Republic, Poland and Estonia.

As one of the oldest cities in Europe, Chemnitz is a living archive of contemporary witnesses who experienced and overcame the transformations of the 20th century. The "City Biographies" project aims to preserve these valuable experiences and preserve them as an instructive source for future generations. Younger people question and interview older contemporary witnesses (generation 60+) about various stages of their lives, while school-age children prepare the recorded dialogues in literary and illustrative form. The interviews will take place in Chemnitz, the 38 municipalities of the Capital of Culture region and in the partner Capital of Culture city of Nova Gorica. The highlight of the project is a multifaceted presentation of the results as part of the Capital of Culture 2025, including an exhibition, podcasts and press work

Organisation & project sponsor: Bürgerinitiative Aktion C in cooperation with KINDERVEREINIGUNG Chemnitz e.V

The International Youth Summer Camp invites young people from Chemnitz, Usti nad Labem and Łódź to take part in a 10-day workshop during the summer holidays of the Capital of Culture year 2025. The aim is to jointly design the Chemnitz peace messages in the form of 300 seven-metre-long banners and thus set a Guinness record. The resulting works will be exhibited to the public, accompanied by explanatory texts and videos about their creation.

The Heckert area was one of the largest new housing estates in the GDR, home to almost 90,000 people in 1990. After reunification, this utopia of modern living quickly lost its appeal. The result was a high vacancy rate and massive demolition. As part of the "Kiosk" project, artistic and creative activities are to take place in the Heckert area in order to revitalise the public space. Through workshops and interactions, e.g. with textiles, graffiti or music, places of exchange and encounters for all generations in the neighbourhood are to be created together with the residents. The aim is to reappropriate the site and make the invisible visible through these joint activities. An artist from France, who grew up in the Ore Mountains, is coming to Chemnitz for the project.

Organisation & project sponsor: Baukultur für Chemnitz e.V

The project aims to explore the (post-)socialist building culture in Chemnitz and Tirana (Albania). As part of the "square stories", intergenerational tandems (people over 60 with young people) explore the history of currently unused/unattractive squares in both cities and venture a look into the future. Together with landscape architects, they develop "square visions" that are to be presented and realised in a European architecture competition. Interventions are to take place at these locations during the Capital of Culture year 2025.

Organisation & project sponsor: Spektakel Kollektiv Chemnitz e.V

The International German Poetry Slam Championships 2025 will take place in Chemnitz. SLAM 25 is the largest festival for stage literature in Europe. Over the course of five days and with over 20 events, around 300 creative guests from six countries are expected to attend. They include poets from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Italy (South Tyrol).

The average age of the population in the twin cities of Manchester (31 years) and Chemnitz (52 years) is one generation apart - a good starting point for an intergenerational/intercultural dialogue. "The Questions" is a three-stage, intergenerational art project that deals with the question of how we live together across differences. An integrative library project and various performances in Chemnitz are planned, as well as platform and residency programmes to promote collaboration between artists from Chemnitz and Manchester.

Organisation & project sponsor: Julia Davis

Julia Davis is a member of the British Commonword Organisation in Manchester, promotes amateur writing and wants to bring something back to the city of her roots with her storytelling project. Her grandparents came to England as Jewish refugees from Chemnitz. The intergenerational writing project brings together young and older people in Chemnitz to share their life stories and learn the writing methods of Commonword. The aim is to record the rich history of the residents between fascism, socialism and democracy and present it in various locations in the city, including museums, libraries and meeting places, during the Capital of Culture year 2025
