On 14 June from 12 to 6 p.m., wheelchair ramps will be built from Lego bricks around the castle pond for the KOSMOS Festival. The ramps enable barrier-free access where it would otherwise be made difficult by steps. The colourful bricks not only draw attention to the everyday obstacles faced by wheelchair users, people with walking frames or parents with pushchairs, but also set an example for inclusion and participation.
In the spirit of sustainability, the ramps are made from donated Lego bricks. From now on, interested parties can hand in colourful bricks that are no longer needed at the Hartmannfabrik (Chemnitz, Fabrikstr. 11, Mon-Sat from 10 am to 6 pm and Sun from 10 am to 3 pm) at reception.
The "Colourful bricks for accessibility" project is organised by the Chemnitz 2025 Diversity Programme and supported by Rita Ebel, the so-called "Lego grandma" from Hanau, who has been building ramps out of Lego bricks on a voluntary basis for over 20 years, making life easier for people with limited mobility. She herself says: "I want to provide food for thought for a more disabled-friendly society and give people the impetus to become active themselves and improve things" (dpa). In future, the ramps will be used for charitable purposes and will be available to organisations and projects.
Lego is neither a sponsor nor a co-operation partner of Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH or the Capital of Culture.
