Participatory textile work on the diversity of the city

Photo: Kati Hyyppä

Everyone experiences Chemnitz differently. We see the city through the eyes of its people and their comings and goings, through its nature and architecture, through our memories of other cities or hometowns. Two women – Sabine Hochmuth, who invites her neighbours to drop into her »wool garage« to craft together, and the Berlin-based Finnish artist Kati Hyyppä, alongside a posse of enthusiastic helpers – are weaving these perceptions of the city into textile form. Participants create real and imaginary objects made of felt and embroidery in hands-on workshops you can attend as often as you want. The objects are sewn together to form a large artwork that provides a bird’s eye view of Chemnitz and mirrors the diversity of the (Capital of Culture) city.

This project is supported by the  Finnland-Institut Berlin and KONE Garant Aufzug GmbH Chemnitz.
