The world as a guest in Chemnitz
Germany's largest international theatre festival THEATER DER WELT is coming to Chemnitz from 18 June to 5 July 2026. Around 40 productions from all over the world invite you to experience the diversity of contemporary theatre arts over 18 festival days. Nine curators from Australia, Canada, Colombia, South Africa, Greece, Jordan, India, Senegal and China will shape the programme. As experts for their respective regions, they will bring theatre, performances, music and participatory formats from the world's most exciting artists to Chemnitz.
In November, there will be a unique opportunity to get to know the international festival curators in person. In conversation with Stefan Schmidtke, Programme Director of Chemnitz 2025, and Christoph Dittrich, General Director of Theater Chemnitz, they will take us on a journey through all continents, talk about their most formative theatre moments and make us curious about the Theatre of the World 2026 festival. Saxony's Minister of Culture Barbara Klepsch will open the evening.
Chemnitz Theatre, The Festival Academy Brussels and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH jointly organise the festival, which has been held in a different German city every three years since 1981.
