In his novel Rummelplatz , Werner Bräunig, born in Chemnitz in 1934, portrays the wild early years of Wismut with powerful language and traces the contradictions of his era. The result is a multi-layered panorama that reflects the post-war period and the spirit of optimism, social utopia and the totalitarian state. To this day, Rummelplatz continues to fascinate as a critically committed social novel. Chemnitz Opera is taking the work, with its references to the region and contemporary history, as the starting point for a multi-part project: Ludger Vollmer (composition) and Jenny Erpenbeck (libretto) are developing a new opera as a commissioned work. A writing workshop will give resonance to people in Chemnitz, Ústí nad Labem and Łódz. A conference works through the diverse themes of the project. Bräunig's novel provides the central theme for all of this: how do people relate to society, politics and the zeitgeist?

Theater Chemnitz is developing the multi-part project Rummelplatz. The starting point is Werner Bräunig's novel of the same name, which Ludger Vollmer (composition) and Jenny Erpenbeck (libretto) are adapting as a work of music theatre for the stage. The world premiere of the work is planned for autumn 2025. It will be about how people relate to social conditions, the political system and the thoughts and moods of their time. The project is part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
