What a year! Chemnitz was European Capital of Culture in 2025. And author and journalist Stefan Tschök spent just as long looking for traces in 2025. From A as in Amtsberg to Z as in Zwickau, he asked cultural professionals to talk to him around 40 times. During his talk tour under the motto "What do we actually get out of it?", Tschök learnt first-hand what moves people - and what the title has brought them. His experiences can now be read: in the first summary of the Chemnitz Capital of Culture year in book form. "Greetings from the provinces" is the title of the book, subtitled: "Where is the Capital of Culture here? A year of discovery - and what remains of it". It will be published by Paperento Verlag in early 2026. The book première is on 15.1.26 in the city library in Chemnitz TIETZ.
Tschök's journey along the "PURPLE PATH" sculpture trail took him through cities and communities in the cultural region. He talked in a convertible as well as in the Kulturkirche, sat in front of a Hartmann locomotive and in a historic dance bar, discussed with his conversation partners sometimes in the theatre, sometimes in a wedding hall, sometimes in a furniture store. And once a work of art even became a stage. Tschök has a degree in transport economics and was the spokesman for Chemnitz transport company CVAG for a long time. He was involved in Chemnitz's bid to become European Capital of Culture from the very beginning. For "Greetings from the provinces", he collected opinions on the major event in the region - and listened to people. The result is a tongue-in-cheek and very subjective look at a year in a state of emergency.
Author Tschök always had his book "Was? Chemnitz?! - On the risks and side effects of a Capital of Culture. And why everything (usually) turns out well in the end" (Paperento Verlag). This tongue-in-cheek "instruction manual for the Capital of Culture" was published just in time for the big festival year. It already focussed on questions such as: What does the title actually mean for the places in the region? What takes place in the municipalities, what doesn't? And what could be done better? The book has since become a perennial favourite, is now in its fifth edition and is also available as an English translation.
