This summer, the Lehngericht in Augustusburg will be transformed into a place of fantasy and encounters: together we will build a cave! In our outdoor workshop, the individual components are first created, which are then assembled into a walk-in cave in the hall of the Lehngericht. Throughout the summer, this special space will be open to all Augustusburg residents young and old - for exhibitions, cinema and a variety of activities.
It all starts on 5 and 6 July 2025, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the cave components will be made together. Immediately afterwards, on 8 and 9 July 2025, also from 11 am to 4 pm, the dioramas for the opening exhibition will be designed. The highlight will be the grand opening of EL GROTTO on 10 July 2025 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
EL GROTTO
Grotto, vault, cave - these are all names for an underground cavity. Such spaces stimulate the imagination and offer space for memories, secrets and new stories. Inspired by the history of mining in this region, EL GROTTO is a place of remembrance and the future - a space that is brought to life by and with the local people. Construction will take place together on Saturday, 5 July and Sunday, 6 July, from 11 am to 4 pm. An exhibition of dioramas - lovingly designed miniature landscapes, similar to model railways - will be presented at the official opening of the cave on 10 July from 4 pm. All interested parties are cordially invited to participate in the construction of these small worlds. The construction of the cave and the dioramas will take place in front of the Lehngericht. The exhibition itself will be on display in the hall of the Lehngericht. Participation is free of charge and open to all age groups!
Anyone who has their own ideas for the use of the cave or would like to participate in the design is invited to simply drop by or come along to the "Council of Little People" on 11 June or 9 July 2025, from 4 to 6 pm in the Lehngericht. Contact: Nadine - phone 037291 159977 or 0176 21611317, e-mail: nadine@aufweiterflur.org.
The project will be accompanied by Verena Seibt (*1980, lives and works in Munich) and Georg Scherlin (*1985, lives and works in Berlin). Both have already realised the clay workshop and exhibition in Augustusburg last year with their Claytime project and are now returning with another participatory project.
The EL GROTTO project is being realised as part of the Augustusburg town centre development fund. The fund is financed by the town of Augustusburg and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building as part of the "Sustainable inner cities and centres" programme.
